Quebec's Consumer Protection office is telling travellers — or would-be travellers — they may be in line for some compensation if they sustained losses as a result of Hurricane Irma.
Charles Tanguay, a spokesperson for the office, suggests they could be eligible for a payout from a fund designed to refund travellers — if they've done business with a licenced travel agency or, in many cases, if you've purshased your airline tickets or booked hotel accomodations online.
"You have to verify, and the best way to do that is to contact the Office de la Protection du Consommateur," Tanguay says.
Travellers are being encouraged to keep their bills if they suffer losses, or incur additional expenses because of the weather.
Tanguay also points out your own travel insurance may be able to bail you out for hurricane-related losses — but you wouldn't be able to double-dip.
Affected travelers may contact the Consumer Protection office to make a claim, or download a claim form on the office's web site.
