After 132 years at its location in downtown Montreal, the Trafalgar School for Girls has sold the building and is looking for a new home.
Head of the school Katherine Nikidis said the stately building on Simpson near Dr. Penfield no longer meets the needs of the all-girls private high school. So they'll be looking for a new downtown location and working with architects to expand the new space.
"The capacity to build innovative spaces, be creative with our spaces," said Nikidis in an interview with CJAD 800.
"Parts of the building are over 125 years old and so we had to weigh the current and the future and look at whether sustaining the current infrastructure was the best way to go or to be able to move forward and develop new infrastructure."
The sale has been in the works for the past year and a half - there were several bidders but finally developers Canderel bought the building for an undisclosed price.
Heritage groups are concerned about what will happen to the site.
Nikidis said they do want to preserve the oldest part of the building at the corner of Simpson and Dr. Penfield.
"There are parts of the building that have merit in terms of heritage and those will be preserved," said Nikidis.
If all goes to plan, students and staff should be at their new home for the start of the 2022 school term.
