Montreal pit bull owners have until the end of the month—this Saturday—to get the special permits required to keep their dogs, or they risk heavy fines and possibly even losing their animals.
There appear to be hundreds of holdouts. City figures obtained by QMI Agency reveal that out of 1,400 pit bulls believed to be living in Montreal, over 250 have not been registered by their owners.
The registration is part of Montreal's animal control bylaw, implemented last year, that outlaws the sale of new pit bulls and regulates ones already owned by a Montrealer.
The permit costs $150 and requires going to an Access Montreal office during posted hours with proof of ownership, sterilization, microchipping and vaccination against rabies.
Pit bull owners must also have no criminal record.
