More than 30,000 people have signed an online petition sponsored by the advocacy group Friends of the Mountain to have Mount Royal designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The petition will support the City of Montreal's nomination in January to have the mountain included in Canada's tentative list of World Heritage Sites.
The list will be updated in December before being submitted to UNESCO for consideration.
Friends of the Mountain describes Mount Royal "as a symbolic place for several communities, including the First Nations, Montreal’s founding communities and the more recent cultural communities and an emblematic feature of Montreal and Québec's identity."
