The owner of two residential buildings in Point St. Charles the city has condemned has failed to get a court injunction blocking an evacuation notice from the city.
That means tenants have until noon Thursday to get out.
A judge handed down the ruling on Wednesday afternoon, saying the buildings on Centre St. are unsafe — beset by water infiltration issues, mold, vermin, and unsafe electrical systems.
Residents had received evacuation notices on Jan. 31, giving them three weeks to get out. But many residents said it would be almost impossible to move out, considering the time of year and the short notice.
A lawyer representing some of the tenants had argued the landlord should compensate the tenants financially for the troubles if they're forced to move.
The city, meanwhile, argued the evacuation is necessary and that the short notice was not unusual because of the exceptional circumstances.
