Revenue Quebec accountants have concluded that taxi drivers and taxi companies don't declare as much as half of the income they generate every year.
But that is about to change because the Legault government will introduce a software programme in 2019, that will be installed on taxi meters and will record every transaction to ensure that PST and GST are collected, and paid.
The program has already been introduced in Quebec bars and restaurants, and will be implemented next year as a pilot project involving about 50 taxis in Montreal and Quebec City.
If the program is a success, every cab in Quebec would be required to have the device installed by 2020.
The Journal de Montreal says Revenue Quebec estimates the government loses about $72 million a year in various tax evasion schemes.
