The 41-year-old Quebec man at the centre of an Amber Alert September 14 appeared in court today but there were no new charges.
Ugo Fredette, wearing a white t-shirt and handcuffs, kept his head hung low and didn't look up once during his brief time in court.
Fredette was arrested in Ontario after leading police on a 24 hour chase. He was hospitalized after suffering self-inflicted injuries and was only transferred to Quebec over the weekend.
The six-year-old boy involved in the Amber Alert was found safe and sound.
Fredette is charged with the second degree murder of his spouse Véronique Barbe who was found dead in St-Eustache September 14.
Fredette's lawyer told reporters a psychiatric evaluation concluded his client was deemed fit to appear in court in St-Jerôme. Pierre M. Gauthier said his client is being protected while in custody, "that's for his own protection."
Crown prosecutor Steven Baribeau said they still have to wait for all of the evidence and then they'll decide if there'll be more charges, if any, either in relation to the abduction of the boy or the death of Yvon Lacasse.
Lacasse's car was stolen the day the Amber Alert was triggered and his body was found last week in the Laurentians last week.
Fredette remains detained until the next court date next month.
He was ordered not to contact nearly a dozen people in Barbe's entourage.
