Montreal firefighters will be able to resuscitate animals in the event of a crisis situation, including a fire or flooding.
They now have animal survival kits thanks to a donation by the union.
They contain special oxygen masks in the event of respiratory distress.
The program was inspired in part by the FDNY-- New York City's fire patrol-- who put similar kits into use after 9/11.
In the United States, an estimated half a million family pets die from smoke inhalation alone, according to the Fetch Foundation, an American-based nonprofit.
The kit also contains burn sheets, bandages, saline, and protective restraints.
