The Sûreté du Québec is going to beef up the number of officers assigned to investigating unsolved murder cases.
The Journal de Montreal reports that 20 officers will be added to the current team of five with a goal of dramatically improving the resolution rate.
Currently the squad solves one or two cases per year, but as many as 750 cases remain unsolved.
Most of the cases date back to the 1960's and 1970's and about two-thirds involve members of the underworld, but cases involving innocent victims are being given priority.
A spokesman for the force says the impetus for increasing the size of the squad was the discovery in 2015 of the remains of nine year old Cederica Provencher who had disappeared from her home in Trois-Rivières on July 31, 2007.
Police suspect her murderer is a man currently in police custody who is awaiting trial on charges of possession and distribution of child pornography, but he has not been charged in the Provencher murder case.
