The Montreal transit corporation (STM) has begun beta-testing an app that will allow it's customers to pay fares using their smart phones.
About 100 STM employees have had the mobile payment application installed on their phones.
The Metro newspaper says the technology is the same as that used to recharge Opus payment cards, but at the moment it is only available for the Android operating system.
STM president Philippe Schobb says the app is a long way from coming into use because it must be able to function on all systems.
He also says it has to be easy and convenient to use to avoid creating delays at bus stops and Metro stations.
The STM is spending $19 million to maintain and upgrade the Opus system, but Schobb says the STM will always accept cash payment to ensure access to public transit is available to everyone.
