If you park illegally in the city of Montreal, you will face stiffer fines.
The city of Montreal has increased the fines for several moving violations that it says haven't been changed since 2009.
Parking without a permit in a zone reserved for handicapped motorists will cost you $229 instead of $100. When you factor in the fees, the fine doubles - from $149 to $300.
Parking illegally in general will cost $49 instead of $40; with the fees, it'll be $62 instead of $53.
Fines for double parking in a way that blocks traffic, notably during rush hour, will go up by $20, from $40 to $60; add in the fees, and it'll go up from $53 to $87.
The city said the fines will reach the average of most North American cities.
It also said the increases are aimed at improving safety and making traffic more fluid.
The changes are expected to be adopted at next month's council meeting.
