A budget overrun on the Plaza St-Hubert renovation project has jumped significantly. The City of Montreal blames a surge in steel prices for the surge in costs associated with replacing the plaza's awning.
A contract to build and install a new one on the Plaza is being signed for roughly $22 million. According to the Journal de Montréal, that's 33 per cent more than the original estimate.
The awning will eventually cover Saint-Hubert Street, between Jean-Talon and Bellechasse streets, with the first installation to get underway this summer. The second part of the installation is scheduled for the summer of 2020.
The project also includes new lighting for two public squares and seven pedestrian crossings.
