Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue has had to get tough with its social distancing restrictions - it's fenced off the boardwalk and closed its parks.
Like the city's parks, the boardwalk had been cordoned off with security tape. Mayor Paola Hawa said that after the last sunny Saturday, that didn't work.
"We closed up (the boardwalk) two weeks ago with tape, Do Not Enter tape. But people were going under the tape, over the tape, removing the tape so we ended up with people all over the boardwalk on Saturday," said Hawa in an interview with CJAD 800.
"Of course, people first think of going to the boardwalk because it's such a beautiful place but that meant there were a lot of people and the boardwalk was overrun with people."
"If you're caught trying to climb the fence or walking where you shouldn't be walking or accessing what you shouldn't be accessing, well. our municipal patrol now has the authority to give out $500 fines," said Hawa.
The fine for municipal infractions used to be $40.
"I think $500, it might seem steep but so is putting somebody else's security and your own at stake," said Hawa.
Côte-St-Luc has recently closed its parks as well.
Police forces across the province now have the power to ticket you on the spot for breaking the social distancing rules - that's $1500 for a first offence including service fees and as much as $6000 for a repeat offence.
