The principal at Verdun's Riverview Elementary says some of her staff members have been pressed into service as crossing guards, because too many cars have been blowing by school buses stopped outside — right past their flashing stop signs.
The school's principal, Debi Dixon, says in addition to not stopping for the school bus signs, they'll also be speeding down Bannantyne Ave., where the school is located.
"When the buses come, either in the morning to drop the kids off, or when they come in the afternoon to pick the students up, obviously, like all school buses, the stop sign goes out. Sometimes, the cars do not stop," she says.
She says there is a crossing guard assigned to the street corner, but she says that's not enough.
"It's just constant. It's just consistent," she says. "Drivers need to realize that when the stop sign is out, we need to stop. It's not a matter of slowing down. They need to stop."
Dixon says she's started a petition drive at the school, urging the borough to place more stop signs in the area.
