The Sri Lankan man accused of murder but set free because of lengthy court delays has been deported.
Sivaloganathan Thanabalasingham was charged with second-degree murder in the killing of his 21-year-old wife Anuja Baskaran in Montreal in 2012, but the charge against him was stayed because of an unreasonable delay.
The case made headlines throughout the province and country, as he was the first murder suspect in Quebec to be set free by the Supreme Court of Canada's "Jordan decision" which set a limit for criminal trials to be completed.
Upon his release he was detained by the Canada Border Services Agency, and a deportation order was issued because of a previous conviction on domestic abuse charges in a case that also involved his wife.
Thanabalasingam originally appealed the deportation order but later asked to be sent back to Sri Lanka as soon as possible.
