A company that has been scoring some big contracts for the removal of contaminated soil from major construction sites in the Montreal area is under investigation.
Provincial police are now looking into the operations of Gestion OFA Environment, suspecting it of dumping debris from major projects like the Champlain Bridge in Quebec, instead of across the Ontario border in Hawkesbury — where the company had said it was going.
The suspicion is the company saved millions of dollars, and pocketed the cash.
Environmentalist Daniel Green says he isn't surprised, considering that, in his opinion, Quebec has been very slow
"What we've seen in Quebec in the last couple of years is very lax enforcement," Green says.
Those close to the investigation say they were impressed by the company's rapid growth and ability to charge less.
