Some victims of last spring's flooding are rushing to get ready for winter as they continue to wait for more government assistance and to renovate their homes.
"Six months ago, I was in 5 1/2 feet of water," said René Leblanc, one of the many residents hard hit in Pierrefonds/Roxboro.
"Here we are six months later. I decided not to wait for the relief program,"
Leblanc said he decided in August to pay out of pocket and start work on his flooded basement. He is just finishing up the insulation and putting in a new furnace and more efficient windows, something other neighbours were able to do as well.
"We just went ahead and did as much as possible as far as our finances could help us in that," said Leblanc.
Leblanc said they are trying to help other neighbours who aren't so lucky: they either had no insurance, are still waiting for financial aid or are living in motels or friend's places.
Leblanc said dealing with the government and getting help has been frustrating.
"It has been slow and at times (non) existent," said Leblanc.
"They were unprepared to start off with and have remained not up to what I believe we expected from our public security people."
And he said that doesn't bode well for next year.
"We're quite concerned about what's going to happen next spring," said Leblanc.
"Are we going to relive this whole thing again?"
