From Monday night through the end of the day on Tuesday, getting around town could be a challenge, to say the least.
Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the Montreal area — which means we're expecting an extended period of freezing rain which should last throughout the day on Tuesday. About 10 to 15 millimetres of freezing rain are expected on Tuesday, and Jean-Philippe Bégin with the weather office says it'll be downright hazardous on the streets and sidewalks.
"We expect significant amounts of freezing rain that was cause dangerously slippery conditions on the roads and sidewalks," Bégin says. "We recommend that people postpone their travels scheduled for [Tuesday]."
Before we get to Tuesday's freezing rain, however, we'll have to deal with Monday.
The weather office says we can expect a few snowflakes during the afternoon on Monday. That snow is expected to intensify by the supper hour, and wind gusts of up to 50 kilometres an hour will blow it all around.
"The road conditions will deteriorate after 6 p.m. because of the snow and blowing snow," Bégin says.
We'll see about 5 to 10 centimetres of snow and ice pellets before the changeover to freezing rain during the overnight hours.
In Montreal, the temperature is expected to hover around the freezing mark throughout the afternoon on Tuesday before it dips back below freezing on Tuesday night. The precipitation is expected to change back over to a few more snowflakes before the system finally peters out later on in the night.
Skies will clear late Tuesday night, paving the way for mostly sunny conditions and more-or-less seasonal temperatures for the rest of the workweek.
