The Montreal Canadiens announced Monday that Shea Weber will be team's new captain, replacing the departed Max Pacioretty.
Weber, who's still recovering from foot surgery and won't be back in the lineup until December, becomes the 30th captain in team history.
Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher have been named his assistants.
Weber becomes the first defenceman to wear the C for Montreal since Chris Chelios, who was co-captain along with Guy Carbonneau in 1989-1990.
