The largest school board in Quebec is stepping into the debate over the future use of the former Montreal Children's Hospital site at René-Lévesque and Atwater.
The Commission scolaire de Montréal wants to ensure that any plan includes construction of an elementary school to accommodate an expected 48% increase in the number of students from the Peter-McGill district over the next several years.
330 children in the district are already being bused to Saint-Léon-de-Westmount Elementary School, and the school board president Catherine Harel -Bourdon tells the Journal de Montreal that involves a commute of two hours every day because of road construction.
It was announced earlier this week that the land has been sold to a developer for $25 million dollars who plans to build 1250 condos, apartment units including social housing and a 32-story hotel.
The next step in the process will be public consultations to examine the proposals in detail.
