A break-out star in Quebec music says she will not change who she is after being criticized for her appearance and her salty language during an awards show last weekend.
Safia Nolin was accepting the award for best newcomer at the ADISQ awards. She chose to wear jeans, a t-shirt and a baggy grey cardigan. During her acceptance speech she used the F-bomb three times and employed a vulgar word in referring to her sister.
She was harshly criticized by some fans and prominent journalists for a sloppy appearance and coarse demeanour.
In an open letter to her critics, the 24-year old says she embraces the right to be and do what she wants.
She also notes that male performers who wore jeans and t-shirts to past awards shows were not subject to the same criticism.
