Pledges have been made, but now we know: safe injection sites are coming to Montreal, and the mayor promises it will be in 2017.
It's long overdue," Coderre admitted, which has taken so long in part, he says, because the former Harper government was against the idea.
That has changed under the Trudeau Liberals, who Coderre offered "kudos" to for being more open to the idea.
The provincial government has also warmed to the idea, pledging $12 million over three years to fund three injection sites to serve Montreal.
Under the current plan, community groups Cactus, Dopamine and Spectre de rue will be modified to contain a supervised area for injection.
While an exact date for when the sites will be open remains unclear, the regional health agency that oversees Montreal's downtown core—the CIUSSS-Centre-Sud-de-l'Île-de-Montréal—has already posted jobs listings for nurses for the injection sites.
