Mayor Hans Gruenwald of Rigaud says his city has decided to extend a state of emergency until further notice because water levels on the Ottawa River remain elevated. More than 300 properties have been flooded.
The emergency extension means services to people forced out of their homes will continue.
"It means to them that the services will keep on being in place ... Red Cross, social services, overnight accommodation somewhere else if need be - the whole machine stays in place," he says.
The state of emergency will be re-evaluated every evening at 5 o'clock.
Mayor Gruenwald adds that he has ordered the purchase of more bottled water for people still in homes whose wells may have been contaminated by dirty run-off.
