Richard Henry Bain will ask for a lighter sentence in 2017, but that may backfire.
His lawyer said he'll argue the sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 20 years is excessive.
There's now word the Crown will ask the Quebec Court of Appeal to increase it to the maximum, which is 25 years.
Bain was found guilty of second degree murder in August in connection with the 2012 Quebec election night shooting at the Metropolis club.
