Jacques Delisle, the only Canadian judge to ever go to prison for first degree murder, was in court today trying to be freed from prison.
The 81-year-old Delisle, from Quebec City, was convicted in 2012 of killing his wife, Nicole Rainville, back in 2009.
At a bail hearing Tuesday, Delisle's son Jean, and his former legal partner Pierre Simon, argued for his release, saying they have no doubt that his father is innocent, and that he would never have hurt his mother.
Delisle had always contended that Rainville's death was a suicide. The Crown, meantime, argued that Delisle killed his partially paralyzed wide in order to live with his mistress, and avoid a costly divorce.
Last year, Delisle told the media that he helped Rainville kill herself by giving her a loaded gun.
Last month, the Justice Department launched a Criminal Conviction Review of Delisle's case — a step that is taken when there is new information in a case.
