Cyclist groups want vehicular traffic banned on Mount Royal, but the area mayor is expressing hope something can be worked out.
An 18-year old cyclist recently died after a collision there with a car that made an illegal U-turn.
Côte-des-Neiges-NDG borough mayor Russell Copeman says there should be what he calls a reflection about the roads on the mountain, including
Camilien Houde, where Clement Ouimet struck the vehicle.
"Are they transit routes or are they destination routes? And I think it's wholly appropriate to have that reflection, it has to involve all the stakeholders, including the neighborhood boroughs. That's precisely what mayor Coderre said. I'm convinced we can come to a consensus", said Copeman.
Copeman says there should be a balance for those traveling on the mountain.
He adds perhaps it's time to ban cars at certain hours.
The city of Montreal is implementing temporary safety measures for cyclists on the mountain, including extending a central concrete median near the lookout.
