Residents in Montreal and the surrounding area fighting to reduce airplane noise from Trudeau Airport are launching new legal actions.
The group Les Pollués de Montréal-Trudeau had its class action lawsuit on noise authorized back in April but it didn`t include a curfew.
So now they're asking the courts for a curfew on flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. while the legal fight is underway.
"We are suffering from those sort of noises at night. We're talking about midnight, 11:30 at night, 5:30 in the morning. That's why this noise aspect is very important," said spokesman Arup Dutta in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
They're also contesting plans to make the airport even bigger.
Dutta said they want public consultations.
"The airport announced an expansion to add another 15 gates and that is obviously going to add more planes so our concern the noise which is already bad is going to get worse," said Dutta.
The group is also concerned about a new study by McGill University researchers showing a high concentration of polluting metallic particles at the airport. The study suggested it was more polluted at the airport than in downtown Montreal and on the highway during rush hour.
So the group is filing a request for another class action lawsuit - this one focusing on air pollution.
