The city of Montreal's decision to rename one of its parks has some members of the Italian community upset.
It's renaming Guido Nincheri park after Quebec City following a donation from the provincial capital toward Montreal's big 375th anniversary next year.
Some within the community said they only found out about the change this week.
But mayor Coderre said the decision was made roughly 2 years ago, adding he's been caught off guard by the controversey.
Tony Sciascia, former president of the National Congress of Italian Canadians, told CTV the move is a slap in the face to many Italian Montrealers.
"One has to be, you know, detached not to realize the significance of the cultural heritage that Guido Nincheri left this city and this province and Canada", said Sciascia.
Nincheri, who was an internationally-renowed artist, and was considered to be Montreal's Michelangelo, died in 1973.
The park, which is also being remodeled, is located at Sherbooke and PIE IX.
