RCMP officers in Quebec are hoping to be the first in Canada to have their own union.
The Quebec Mounted Police Members' Association (QMPMA) has officially filed a request to allow its 800 RCMP members in Quebec to unionize.
The association deposited its request today with the province's labour relations commission.
The Quebec officers tried to file for accreditation with the two other RCMP associations but they couldn't agree on details and the way to go about it.
A Supreme Court decision in 2015 granted RCMP officers the right to form a union. Until then, they were the only law enforcement agency in Canada that prevented its members from unionizing.
