The majority of Quebecers think spying on journalists crosses the line.
A Leger-Journal de Montreal-TVA poll shows that 72% of respondents said placing a reporter's phone under surveillance to uncover their sources is unacceptable, with nearly an identical margin telling pollsters an independent investigation into the practice should be launched.
Of the men and women surveyed, 72% believe journalists play an important role, as watchdogs for public authorities such as the government, police forces and crown corporations.
Respondents were split three ways when asked if they believed if SPVM chief Philippe Pichet still had the legitimacy to keep his job. 38% said no, 27% said yes while 35% were unsure or preferred not to answer.
