A 65-year old man from Quebec has been sentenced to eight years in prison, in Australia for his role in a drug smuggling case that also involved two young women from Quebec.
André Tamine apologized at his sentencing hearing in Sydney yesterday and said he was embarrassed by his decision.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports Judge Kate Traill said she believed Tamine was "remorseful".
Tamine was arrested after his cruise ship docked in Sydney in August of 2016.
Police raided his cabin and discovered 65 kilos of cocaine in his bags.
Prosecutors said it had a street value of as much as $29 million.
Tamine must serve five years of his prison term before being eligible for parole.
Two other Quebecers 25 year old Mélina Roberge and 30 year old Isabelle Lagacé were also arrested that day.
They were also convicted of drug smuggling and are serving jail terms of eight and seven years respectively.
