The Quebec government has spent $31 million dollars to pay for extended warranties for computers that still use the Windows 2000 operating system, and the Windows 2003 system for servers.
Since introducing Windows 2000 18 years ago, Microsoft has created eight upgraded operating systems including XP and Windows 10.
The Journal de Montreal says more than 375 servers use outdated systems, despite the fact that the government spent almost $200 million dollars for newer versions of Windows over the past five years.
The newspaper says many departments have simply been slow in migrating their servers to the more secure and supported systems.
