The Quebec government is telling the federal government to mind its own business when it comes to growing marijuana at home.
Minister of federal-provincial relations Jean-Marc Fournier said if the federal government contests Quebec's eventual law on marijuana banning you from growing pot at home, they will fight it court.
But Fournier added it shouldn't come to lengthy costly legal battles - not when Quebec has jurisdiction over the matter.
Fournier was responding to a statement by Federal Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould who said there are limits to the zero tolerance approach some provinces are taking to growing marijuana at home.
Fournier said Ottawa can ban five or more plants at home but as for authorizing fewer than five plants:
"It is not in their jurisdiction to do that," said Fournier.
"We respect the fact that they've got jurisdiction in criminal law, they have to respect the fact that we've got jurisdiction in civil law."
Fournier said their public consultations made it clear what Quebecers want- protecting public health and public safety.
"That is the intention of Quebecers," said Fournier.
"We have the power to express the intention of Quebecers, that is what we're going to do."
The federal government's marijuana law is scheduled to take effect July 1 but that date has been up in the air.
