The taxi and the construction industry lead the pack when it comes to tax evasion in Quebec.
A report in La Presse this morning cites a confidential document that was prepared for the meeting of federal and provincial finance ministers in Vancouver last June.
The authors say no less than 60% of the revenues generated by cab rides are never declared to the government.
That compares to an 18% of revenues from bar and restaurant sales and 14% of revenue generated by construction projects.
But in terms of cold, hard cash the construction industry leads all sectors when it comes to tax evasion.
Revenue Quebec estimates that undeclared tax from the construction industry amounts to $1.5 billion annually compared to $72 million for taxis.
The Quebec government is currently considering looking at installing machines in taxis similar to those placed in restaurants and bars which include tax declaration software allowing the government to track all sales.
