Without a contract for over a year, more than 1,100 provincial government lawyers and notaries will walk off the job today.
Several rallies are scheduled to take place in front of the courthouses of major Quebec cities, including here in Montreal at about 8:30 A.M.
The general unlimited strike will touch many government departments and agencies, representing the province in civil, administrative and criminal cases as well as acting as legal counsel for ministers.
The strike could potentially slow the new legislation, judicial rulings and any current cases involving the government.
While working conditions have been a major point of concern for the union, its desire to change the negotiation process to binding arbitration from the current mediation is the main sticking point.
