AirBnb is in talks with the Quebec government concerning a lodging tax when customers book online.
A spokesperson for Revenu Quebec tells the Journal de Montreal that negotiations are ongoing not only with Quebec, but other Canadian provinces as well.
Hotels and other rental homes typically come with a 3.5% lodging tax during online booking. AirBnb says it would have collected over $500,000 in Montreal alone last year.
Ève Paré with the Greater Montreal Hotel Association tells the Journal that while the tax is a good idea, AirBnb will also have to make sure insurance is covered and that the company is not exempt from those obligations.
AirBnb already has tax agreements with over 200 cities. It says it hopes to increase that number to 700 by next year.
