Even though a lot of Quebecers don't have a family physician, the Health Minister said the province has too many doctors.
Gaetan Barrette said working doctors need to be more efficient and practice medicine, the "advanced access" way, meaning providing appointments the same day or, at the most, within 3 days.
He added physicians have to better organize their practices in order to stay open longer on more days, including weekends.
Patients rights advocate Paul Brunet disagreed with the minister about maybe cutting medical school admissions.
"I said that Dr. Barette is right in claiming for better productivity of doctors, I never said that he was right in thinking of cutting the number of admissions in medical school", said Brunet.
Brunet, who was a guest on the Aaron Rand show, also said something similar happened by the end of the 1990's under then premeir Lucien Bouchard.
"He cut the admission and we were stuck in another crisis of accessibility, but I never said that I wanted and agree with the minister that he should cut the admission of doctors", added Brunet.
There are 20,000 practicing physicians in the province and Barrette said that's roughly 10 per cent more doctors than required.
