The new public inquiry on protecting journalists' sources has until March 1, 2018 to do its work and report back to the Quebec government.
Justice minister Stephanie Vallée says it will be headed by Jacques Chamberland, who's been a Quebec Court of Appeal judge since 1993.
The police will be represented by a former Quebec City police chief Alexandre Matte, and journalists will be represented by Guylaine Bachand, a media lawyer agreed to by several newsrooms in the province.
"They are the experts, and we have appointed them to do the light on the situation and make recommendations in order to make sure that the freedom of the press and the protection of sources is really taken into account here in Quebec," Vallée said.
The inquiry comes after we learned Montreal police spied on La Presse journalist and CJAD contributor Patrick Lagacé — and the SQ said it spied on some others.
