Residents of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve are concerned a proposed extension of l'Assomption Boulevard could result in a "mini-Turcot Interchange" in their neighbourhood.
The Journal de Montreal reports city council plans to spend $50 million to extend l'Assomption from where it currently ends at Hochelaga down to Notre-Dame. Under the proposal, work on l'Assomption would begin next year and combined with the Souligny Avenue extension, residents fear more trucks will travel through the area.
Borough mayor Réal Ménard tells the Journal he believes the road extension is in the best interest of nearby residents, and that the number of trucks on both l'Assomption and Souligny would actually be reduced.
A petition against the city's proposal is expected to be launched by residents on Tuesday.
