What caused a fatal fire in Laval?
A 75-year old man died in an overnight blaze in the Sainte-Rose district.
There was no working smoke detector in the apartment on Bas-du-Plateau-Ouimet St., just east of Curé-Labelle Blvd.
"Fire officials say the fire was likely caused by a lit cigarette on a mattress. The owner of the building, who did not want to go on camera, confirmed the man was a smoker. A Laval bylaw requires owners of apartment buildings to install smoke detectors in each unit", reported CTV's Caroline Van Vlaardigen.
Firefighters discovered the the man in a hallway.
He was in cardiorespiratory arrest, but attempts to save him failed.
Other residents in the building were able to return to their homes.
According to neighbors, the man visited his wife every morning for years after she was hospitalized.
