A hearing begins today in the case of Patrick Ouellet, a Sûreté du Québec police officer who was found guilty of dangerous driving in the death of a five year old boy in February of 2014.
Pre-sentence arguments get underway at the courthouse in Longueuil this morning.
Ouellet was behind the wheel of an unmarked police car, in the midst of a surveillance operation, travelling at 134 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, when he hit another car near the intersection of Gaétan-Boucher Boulevard and Davis Boulevard.
Five year old Nicholas Thorne-Belance died in hospital several days later. His sister was injured.
The judge ruled there was no justification for Ouellet to be driving so fast.
A conviction for dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.
