The Parti Quebecois wants a discussion on speed limits in Quebec.
PQ MNA Martin Ouellet says if elected next fall he would spearhead a pilot project to raise the speed limit on some highways to 120 km/h.
He calls the current system to set highway speeds hypocritical because motorists know that they can exceed a posted speed limit without fear of getting a ticket, because police are tolerant of speeding within certain limits.
The PQ had tried to get the pilot project included in recent Highway Code amendments, but it was rejected by the government which cited studies that a show a correlation between an increase in the number of serious accidents with an increase in speed limits.
