The English-speaking community's fight against Premier François Legault's plan to abolish school boards now has an unlikely ally — the Parti Québécois.
Pascal Bérubé, the party's interim leader, insists that not only is the CAQ government's plan to replace the boards with so-called 'service centres' a needless exercise, but he also says the community has rights. "We are all Quebecers and the anglophone has things to say which interest us,” he told reporters.
He also cast doubt on whether such a fundamental overhaul of school structures will improve graduation rates.
Bérubé says he can't say for sure if the PQ will reject the school board plan once a bill is tabled in the National Assembly, likely within the next few weeks — saying he'll wait and see how the new law is worded.
MNAs return to Quebec City for a new National Assembly session on Feb. 5.
