Quebec's police watchdog has been investigating after a man was shot by Montreal police following an armed robbery Monday morning.
The investigations unit, or BEI, said its information suggests the 26-year-old suspect robbed a taxi driver in the Montreal North borough and fled, heading north on foot.
They said police cornered the man in a bus shelter on Pie-IX north of Martial and asked him to drop the handgun he was holding.
Officers shot the suspect after he gestured at them and refused to drop his weapon.
It's unclear exactly how many times he was shot, but witness Anthony Ianniciello says he and his son heard two banging noises that prompted him to head to the intersection to figure out what had happened. "We were curious to see what was happening," he said, "and we just saw a lot of cops, and then somebody told me someone had been shot."
The suspect was taken to hospital with injuries that are considered life-threatening and he remains in critical condition.
The independent investigations unit is called to scrutinize the circumstances when a person is killed or injured during a police operation.
