Montreal police shot and killed a roaming coyote in a residential neighborhood in Park Ex earlier this week.
Police say a 9-1-1 call was placed at around 11 a.m. on Monday morning about a coyote on the loose near the corner of de l'Esplanade Ave. and Bellarmin St., a few blocks north of Jarry Park and one block south of the Met.
As wary residents looked on, police arrived with KetchAll poles and tried without success to contain the animal. They were joined a short time later by wildlife ministry officials.
"When the wildlife ministry agents tried to capture the coyote, it didn't work out," police spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils said. "Police were able to locate the coyote again behind a pool in an isolated area. The coyote was showing signs of aggression, so they had no choice to use their firearm."
There have been several coyote sightings in the Villeray-St. Michel-Parc Extension borough in recent months — including one case earlier this month in St. Michel's Frederic-Back park where a coyote is said to have mauled a chihuahua to death as its owner was walking it.
