A big weapons seizure on the South Shore involving some high calibre assault rifles.
Police say it happened after a traffic accident involving 43-year-old Hugo Bernard. The other driver left the scene and police needed to go to Bernard's home to get his side of the story.
They took the precaution of checking the gun registry and found that he had many legal, registered firearms.
When they searched his home to make sure they were all still there, they found that in addition to the legal, registered ones he also had many illegal weapons.
In all, he had 31 handguns which were the legally registered ones. There were also 8 unrestricted guns, several non-registered ones. One of the weapons was hidden in the ceiling.
"We do not know where they came from, but definitely we will look into that definitely because it preoccupies us as well," said Longueuil police captain Nancy Colagiacomo.
Bernard has been arrested and faces 19 weapons-related charges and will remain behind bars until his next court appearance.
Police are checking to see if any of the guns were used to commit crimes and whether Bernard has any connection to organized crime.
