Officers were called to the Montreal General Hospital recently over the sighting by staff of a man believed to be armed visiting a shooting victim, Montreal police confirm to CJAD 800.
The victim was supposedly linked to street gangs.
Police say officers responded quickly, locked down the patient's room while also doing a thorough search of the premises. Two men were detained, both of whom were unarmed and later released.
Staff told The Montreal Gazette nurses on the floor hid after an orderly spotted a man that she said had a gun hanging out of the back of his pants.
They also said security guards are furious they were not notified they had a believed gang member recovering in their midst, calling it a security breach.
A statement from hospital administration tells The Gazette there is no policy to notify security guards of patients linked to organized crime, but it is common practice and this incident was an oversight.
The incident follows an emergency room nurse nearly being strangled to death in September by a patient in September. The workplace health and safety board gave hospital administrators until Dec. 8 to respond with better training guidelines or faces possible fines.
