A funeral was held Friday for 79 year old Zelia Ponte Araujo, who was struck by a man driving a stolen pickup truck last Sunday.
The Santa Cruz Portuguese Church on St-Urbain Street was packed with mourners who came to pay their respects. Araujo's son Jim tells CTV he isn't surprised, as his mother cared about a lot of people. He says it's amazing that so many returned the sentiments.
Araujo's other son Robert says it's nice to know the suspect is in police custody and won't be out in the public potentially committing other crimes.
33 year old Steven Harley Pinnell appeared in court Friday on charges of hit-and-run causing death, auto theft and possessing stolen goods. Araujo was struck by the pickup that had been heading southbound on St-Urbain. The vehicle did not stop, making a left-hand turn onto Mont-Royal.
Pinnell was apprehended in North Bay, Ontario several days later, after Ontario Provincial Police spotted the pickup. He is expected to be back in court Monday for a bail hearing.
