The new Montreal city council will sit for the first time next Monday and the first order of business will be a vote for council president.
The Metro newspaper says another gender barrier will fall because Mayor Valérie Plante will nominate a woman to the post.
No woman has been named council president since the office was created in 1986.
The two women being considered for the position are the newly elected mayor of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Émilie Thuillier and the new mayor of LaSalle, Manon Barbe.
The tasks of the council president include moderating the debates, only voting when council is deadlocked and overseeing some of the operations of city hall.
Plante became the first woman in history to be named Mayor of Montreal after winning the election earlier this month
