Like it or not, it looks as if the new Mayor of Montreal, Valerie Plante, is going to have to break a key election campaign promise because of circumstances beyond her control.
The Journal de Montreal says as part of its commitment to Formula 1, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will be closed for construction next summer, making it impossible to move the Formula E race from the streets of Montreal to the race track.
As part of an agreement that extended the Formula 1 contract to 2029, the city committed to a $48 million dollar upgrade of the track facilities and the work will begin just days after the Montreal Grand Prix June 10 making the track inaccessible.
The money will be spent to build a new control tower and re-building the garages along pit row.
The newspaper says there are only three possible solutions for the mayor-elect to consider including cancelling the Formula E race and paying a significant penalty, breaking her campaign promise and allowing the race to be staged downtown again or moving the race to another neighbourhood that would be less disrupted by the road closures.
